Inlay · Onlay, at a glance

What is this treatment?
Treatment that places a prosthesis made from an impression or scan to fit the damaged area. Assess how much of the remaining tooth to cover for protection when filling directly with resin is difficult.
What concerns are addressed?
I was told the decay is large; I want to replace an old amalgam
What precautions are there?
After treatment there can be sensitivity, pain, bleeding, gum changes, or need for retreatment. Risks and recovery for each treatment method are individually explained during the consultation.

What are inlay and onlay?

Treatment that places a prosthesis made from an impression or scan to fit the damaged area. Assess how much of the remaining tooth to cover for protection when filling directly with resin is difficult.

Difference between inlay and onlay

Inlay mainly fills internal chewing-surface defects; onlay covers cusps including convex cusps. If walls are weak or fracture risk exists, we check whether cusp coverage is needed.

Choose material and coverage together

Materials like gold or ceramic are chosen based on tooth position, remaining structure, chewing force, bonding conditions, and esthetic demands. If remaining walls are insufficient or cracked, consider crown or other protection.

Limits and precautions to know

After treatment there can be sensitivity, pain, bleeding, gum changes, or need for retreatment. Risks and recovery for each treatment method are individually explained during the consultation.

05 / YOUR QUESTIONS · 4 QUESTIONS

Questions you might have before care.

01What's the difference between inlay and onlay?
Coverage differs. Inlay fills within cusps; onlay covers cusps up to the chewing points. Decide by remaining tooth walls and fracture risk.
02What materials for inlay?
Choose gold, ceramic etc. considering position, restoration range, thickness and bonding conditions. Each material has pros and cons in esthetics, strength and cost.
03How decide between inlay and crown?
Based on remaining structure, cracks and chewing forces. Determine if inlay/onlay can preserve tooth or crown needed. Not decided solely by root canal presence.
04How long do inlays last?
Lifespan depends on material, remaining tooth and gums, chewing forces and hygiene. Monitor margin decay, debonding and fracture regularly.
